does technology increase risk?

I read an interesting article in the Lewiston  (Idaho) Morning News that addressed the proliferation of Personal Locator Beacons (PLB). One expert, Mike Beiser, director of the University of Idaho Outdoor Program, said that the devices give a false sense of security.

I believe that PLBs serve a useful function, but I agree with Beiser that having your location plotted by satellite can lead to increased risk taking behavior. Many people relying on these devices don’t understand that, although your position can be plotted, actual help can still be hours or days away. With that in mind, nothing takes the place of well developed first aid and survival skills.

If you are injured in a wilderness setting, first aid skills can make the difference between life and death. If you are lost, bushcraft and survival skills keep you reasonably comfortable until help arrives. By all means, buy a PLB if you want, but take the time to learn and practice basic first aid and bushcraft skills.
